Bruce was a very smart guy—the brain of our group—analytical and very academic in his approach to work. So he wasn’t a real “jock,” which unfortunately for him, as things were back then, meant he didn’t get to fly for almost two decades. But NASA caught up to him with the shuttle program, and his years developing that untethered EVA backpack paid off—flying it first made history.

It’s apparent McCandless has done a lot of research, and he mixes the personal with the professional of his life to interesting effect.
